In der Welt von Valkyria Chronicles schreiben wir das Jahr 1935 EC und der europäische Kontinent versinkt im Zweiten Europäischen Krieg zwischen der autokratischen osteuropäischen Imperialen Allianz - auch einfach als das Imperium bekannt - und der Atlantischen Föderation. Dabei geht es um den kostbaren Rohstoff Ragnit. Das Imperium fegt über den Kontinent wie ein unkontrolliertes Wildfeuer und hat seine Augen auf die reichen Ragnitvorkommen des Fürstentums Gallia gerichtet. Gallia verhält sich in dem Konflikt zwar neutral, aber seine Einwohner werden dennoch ihre Heimat gegen die unausweichliche Invasion verteidigen müssen. Als Spieler folgt man Leutnant Welkin Gunther und dem vielgepriesenen Squad 7 der gallischen Miliz, die sich der schier unüberwindbar scheinenden Macht des Imperiums entgegenstellen.
